New FDA antibiotic measure leaves much to be desired

Yesterday, the FDA announced a new program to phase out low dose non-therapeutic antibiotics in livestock.  While this measure shows a bit of progress; the problem is that the program is entirely voluntary. Until consumer demand dictates the desire, many of the Big Food companies are not likely to change their practices.  If you are going to keep animal protein and products in your diet; the smart play is to buy organic, locally raised, antibiotic free meat.  You can look into a local Community Supported Agriculture program to help you do this.  I know of several in the Pittsburgh area.  If you are interested, please let me know.

I have mentioned some of the concerns regarding antibiotics in livestock before on my blog (9/20 post).  If you’re consuming factory farmed meat, you may not be aware that you are also getting a dose of antibiotics with your meal.  This can  increase bacterial resistance to antibiotics down the road, should you need to use medicinally.  imgres-1
