Get in the know on GMOs

Many people that I run into and chat with don’t know much about GMOs and their large presence in the US food supply.  I wanted to share some basic information to raise awareness about GMOs as the GMO labeling issue will be voted on in the state of Washington on November 5th.

GMOs are genetically modified organisms (foods) that are altered by science in a way that traditional cross breeding cannot produce.  They are experimental and cannot occur naturally;  and veggiejane believes that they are a threat to our environment and health.

Most GMOs are produced to resist pesticides and herbicides.  Food producers can then dump these chemicals on our food and the GMO crops are likely to be able to withstand it.  Now these crops can end up on your plate.   At least 60 countries around the world have banned the use of GMOs in their food supply including all of the countries in the European union, Australia, and Japan.  Mexico just banned the growing of organic corn in its country.  Note that almost 90% of US corn, wheat, and soy are genetically modified.

Wouldn’t you want to know if the food you are buying is GMO or not?  Even if you don’t believe that GMOs are necessarily harmful?  Believe it or not, there is no law requiring a label on GMO products, so you simply do not know.  This is a huge reason that I buy certified organic products.

Why isn’t there a label law for GMO product, you ask?  There is no label requirement because the powerful biotech companies don’t want  to make you aware that you are buying a science experiment, and they’ve succeeded in their lobbying.  Companies who use GMO product have put tons of money into an anti-labeling campaigns in states claiming that it will ‘cost’ the American Public.  Many of these companies include but are not limited to:  Nestle, Del Monte, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Cheerios, Kellogg’s, Ocean Spray, General Mills, Hershey, and many many more.  Got any of these in your cabinets?  You’re most likely eating GMOs and feeding them to your family.

The state of Washington is voting on GMO labeling on November 5th.  This issue was defeated in California last year, and the battle is on for November 5th.  If 522 is passed, it will be the first law of its kind in the country.
